About
I am an art historian, author and musician.
My forthcoming biography on Edward Hopper (Yale University Press, 2025) developed out of my four years of doctoral research on the artist at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London from 2018 to 2022.
In October 2020, I discovered that all of Edward Hopper’s early oil paintings – long thought to have been original landscapes painted in and around his hometown – were copies after other artists. This discovery, published in The Burlington Magazine, garnered international attention, leading to features in the New York Times, The Times of London, Sky Arts, The Art Newspaper, Daily Mail and Smithsonian Magazine, among others.
My research interests are focused predominantly on American art and visual culture from 1850 to 1980, with a special focus on American realism and modernism around the turn of the twentieth century. I am particularly interested in historic and enduring constructions of American identity.
Prior to my PhD, I received my MA in History of Art from The Courtauld Institute of Art and my BA in History of Art from University of Bristol. I have since taught at The Courtauld Institute of Art as an Associate Lecturer.
In the years between 2013 and 2018 I was a full-time professional musician, songwriter and producer, fronting the alternative bands White Kite and Fossa. My band White Kite was signed to the label Kobalt Music, agency 13 Artists and managed by FP Music, and enjoyed success touring Europe and playing several major festivals.
Most recently, I am releasing music under the artist name Louis Jerome and will be putting out new music soon.
I am represented by Emma Bal at Madeleine Milburn Literary, TV & Film Agency and I currently live in London.
